If you have multiple computers at home and want to network them together to share files and devices then this article is for you! In this article I’ll show how to setup file sharing in a mixed environment consisting of Windows 7 and Windows XP.

The computer that will be sharing (serving) the files will be the Windows 7 computer. The computer that will be accessing the shared files on the Windows 7 PC will be a Windows xp computer. This article assumes that you either:

A: have your internal software firewalls disabled since they can often obstruct network access. Only do this if you access the internet through a router (or a wireless router).

or

B: know how to allow network access to your internal subnet. Since you’re reading this article it’s pretty safe to assume that you have no idea what I’m talking about in point B. Just go ahead and turn off your firewalls (for now at least).

On your Windows 7 computer:

1. Click the Windows globe on the bottom left (the old start button).
2. Right-click “Computer” and click properties.
3. Take note of the Workgroup name.

On your Windows XP computer:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-Click “My Computer” and click properties.
3. Click Computer Name.
4. Click Change.
5. Select Workgroup.
6. Type in the same workgroup name.
7. Click Ok twice.
8. Reboot.

Back on your Windows 7 computer lets share your documents folder to everyone in your workgroup:

1. Click Start.
2. Click Computer.
3. On the left window, under libraries, right-click documents and click share with: specific people
4. Click the drop down.
5. Select Everyone.
6. Click Add.
7. Click Read and change it to read/write
8. Click Share
9. Select My Documents
10. Click Next.
11. Sharing your documents may take awhile depending on how many have.
12. Click Done.

Back to your Windows XP PC:

You may now access documents on the Windows 7 computer by

1. Opening your “My Computer”.
2. Click “My Network Places” on the left.
3. Click “Entire Network”.
4. You should now see the name of your Windows 7 computer.
5. Double click the Windows 7 computer and you’ll see any shared files plus any shared devices.

You can follow the steps above to share any other files or folders on your Windows 7 computer.

A person who is usual with the computer means who everyday works on their computer and does lots of things on it one thing is always fixed in their mind PC speed. But, they don’t know that there are a lot of ways that consider appropriate and regular maintenance that can be done to increase PC’s speed. There are 3 tips briefly mentioned in this article for your help.

Tip 1 – free you’re Disk Space and Use a Registry Cleaner
If you are functioning with Windows XP or Vista it can be done with the help of very easy way. You have to just go to the Start menu, after that you have to click on All Programs after that shift to Accessories, then click on the System tools. Later than doing this you will find a folder in this folder you will see a service called as Disk Cleanup. Move to it and click on it after you click on that you will be prompted.

This was one of the ways used for growing the speed it can also be used for doing the following things:

* Get temporary free from the files that are sitting on your computer
* Downloaded programs can be detached that is not much used by you.
* Recycle bin should be always empty
* Windows should be free from the optional workings from that is not necessary

Use of registry cleaner to clear up your registry helps big time. There are lots of people who don’t know about this, though it is very much essential that the registry should be cleaned. Lots of registry cleaners which are responsible and dependable are accessible, download one and make use of it on your PC.

Tip 2: Make your access to faster the data
The other simple process of maintenance that can help you how to increase the PC speed by moving back into the System Tools. This is to give your data which is on your computer the faster access. Again go back to the System Tools and click on Disk Defragmenter.

You must do this since at the time when you uninstall many of the programs or add many of the files, your data can roll into fragmented and the computer will have more complexity in finding it.

It is not sure if you have to run it? Here it is when to run it and how to increase the speed of the PC:

* As a maintenance feature monthly
* When more than a few files have been added by you at once
* When you will see that you only have about 15% or less of free disk space

Tip 3: Repair and find your disk errors
On all computers some of the times have disk errors show up. Lastly how to increase PC speed is to use the error effectiveness and solve the problem that comes in your Windows program. If your computer is being used by you daily, it’s better to run this utility at least once each week.

If you have presently installed a new Windows version or new programs

The very first thing that you should see to it is close all your files before you start this utility. Following that you have to, click Start and go to My Computer. Click on C or D drive to look for for the bad sectors, click on the word Properties. There will come into view a dialog box you have to click Tools. Finally, click on Check Now. Select the one you want to scan and Start. This will find things which are moving and examining and repairing of the error will be completed.

Is Your Data Encryption Really Secure

—————————-
There are various types and methods of data encryption. Some of the most popular forms of data encryption include single file encryption, folder encryption, volume encryption, whole disk encryption, and of course email encryption.

The Windows XP operating system has the ability to perform file and folder encryption. There are 3rd party tools, like PGP Desktop, which can perform whole disk logical disk, file and e-mail encryption.

If you routinely deal with confidential or sensitive information, or if you are concerned about private information falling into someone else hands, encryption may be the way you want to go. However, there are a few things you should be aware of so you donot have a false sense of security.

First, What Is Data Encryption
————————————————–
Throughout ancient and modern history people have come up with ways to mask, hide and verify that information is secure or valid. For instance the ancient Babylonians in 4000 B.C. used something call intaglio a process in which images and writing were carved or etched into stone that identified certain Babylonian merchants when they were trading. Each trader or merchant had a specific intaglio to make his mark this way his customers would know that what they were purchasing belonged to or was produced by a specific merchant. This is a bit different then encryption more like todays digital signature, another process typically part of data encryption.

Encryption today is much more advanced and complex. It is used for everything from securing military secrets to keeping intellectual property confidential. There are various forms of encryption techniques, some stronger or more secure than others. In its basic form encryption can be thought of as the masking, or the scrambling of original human readable information. The person who is masking the information must provide the person he is sending the information to with some sort of key that allows them to unscramble the information so they can make sense of it. For instance I use encrypted e-mail messages so I can correspond with my customers on a regular basis. I do this because during certain types of projects my customers and I discuss private information such as security holes discovered during security assessments. This type of information is obviously not something we would want to fall into someone else hands.

Most Data Does Not Start Out Encrypted So Be Careful
—————————-
The primary reason I am writing this article is to point out a couple specific issues with data encryption. During a recent discussion with a friend of mine he told me that he was using Windows XP folder encryption to secure some of his confidential information. He asked me if I thought this was a secure method of storing important documents. My response was yes and no. The data encryption used by Windows XP is relatively secure, but the issue is that the majority of the data that is now encrypted in the folder did not start out that way.

Lets take for example, a word document that contains your personal financial information. You may have written this document so you have a central location where account numbers, social security numbers, and other private and individual identification information is easily retrievable. After you are finished writing the document, you then transferred it to your secure encrypted folder. Since it is now in a secure folder, only you are able to access it because only you know the pass-phrase that was used to generate the encryption key. For the most part, this assumption is correct.

While you were writing that document you probably hit the save button several times. Or if you are like me, many times. I’ve lost lengthy documents several times in the past and have trained myself to hit the save button pretty frequently. Every time you hit the save button a new temporary version of the file is created. This is typically saved in the c documents and settings profile name local settings temp directory. This is done for recovery and undue purposes. For instance if you make a mistake while writing the document and need to undue your actions, one of these temp files may be used to undue the action. Also if your system or application crashed while writing the document you can recover it from the temp files stored in this directory. You may have had to go through this before and it works very well.

Now that you have finished your document and copied or moved it to the secure folder your document is secure, right? Wrong. Chances are the temporary files in your temp directory are still there. Even if you were to delete them there is a significant chance they can be recovered using open source or very inexpensive undelete or data recovery software. If someone where to get hold of your computer, hard drive or gain remote access to your system somehow there is a significant chance the unencrypted original version of your document can be located. So what can you do to make sure that your encrypted version of your file and data is the only version. There is not a clear or 100% secure answer to this question but I will share with you how I deal with the issue.

Changing The Location Of Unencrypted Temp Files
———————————————————-
The primary way applications like Microsoft Word determine where to store temporary versions of your files is by looking at two user environment variables. One called tmp and one called temp. Right clicking on my computer can access them, choose properties then choose the advanced tab and click environment variables. Here you can edit or change the default location for temporary files. One thing I have to point out is even though a large number of software packages use these locations for temporary storage it will be hard to determine if they all do or if they save temp files in other locations. You will have to do a little investigating to determine where various applications store their temp files. On my system I have changed these variables to point to an encrypted disk where I store my encrypted data and files. This way, I can be reasonably sure that temporary or working versions of the files are also encrypted.

Encrypted Files May Not Stay Encrypted When Copied or Moved
———————————————–
Another thing you should be aware of is what happens to encrypted files or folders when they are copied or moved to another location. If a file or folder that has previously been encrypted is copied or moved to another Windows NTFS partition or volume, the encryption is preserved (under most circumstances). However if you move or copy the encrypted data to volume or partition that is not NTFS, the file is automatically decrypted. Also, just because a file is encrypted on your hard disk it does not mean that this file will be encrypted when you e-mail it to someone. E-mail encryption is a totally different procedure. Also, keep in mind that encrypted files are decrypted when they are transmitted over a network connection.

Make Sure Deleted Unencrypted Files Are Really Gone
—————————————————
Because data that is deleted from disk may be recoverable for quite some time, I use another procedure to limit or reduce the risk of this possibility. As I mentioned earlier data that has been deleted can in many cases be easily recovered using off the shelf software. In order to be reasonably sure deleted data is not easily recoverable, you need to write over that portion of the disk where the file and its fragments were located. Actually, you most likely need to do this multiple times just to be sure the data is unrecoverable. The PGP Desktop software I use to create encrypted file systems, send encrypted e-mail and create encrypted zip files also has a tool called Wipe Free Space. This tool will write random patterns of data to all space on a drive that is flagged as free. You can tell the software how many times to perform this procedure but the default it usually three passes. My primary system performs this task every night. This way I can be reasonably sure the unencrypted versions of my encrypted files are not just sitting around waiting to be recovered.

Conclusion
———-
If you are concerned about keeping important data confidential, file, folder or disk encryption is a good solution. If configured properly you can be reasonably sure that your private information will remain private. Just remember that most data does not start out encrypted and that remnants of the original information may still exist in an unencrypted state. There are many options with regard to data encryption Windows XP native file and folder encryption, open source encryption solutions, or commercial encryption solutions such as PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). Do some research up front to determine which may be the best method for you.

All windows PC users will encounter freezing problems from time to time. Freezing can take place when you are not at work on the PC. It may take place when you are listening to audio, watching videos or running antivirus software.

Usually, to recover from system freezing you can press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination. With Windows 95, 98, and ME, this will give you the option of rebooting your computer. With Windows NT, 2000, and XP when you press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination this will open the Task Manager window. You may then browse through the running programs listed in Task Manager, pick the program that is not responding, then click the End Task button to close the program. When the program is closed, your system should be running normally.

You can experience system freezing if you run an application which is not compatible with your system. Quite obviously you need to remove the application to correct this problem. If there is a compatible version of the application you should obtain this and install it instead.

If you install a Windows operating system that requires more resources than your PC has, this will result in freezing. The minimum system requirements for Windows XP is a 300 MHz processor, 1.5 GB disk space, SVGA (800×600) resolution monitor, and CD-ROM or DVD Drive for installation. If the processor, disk space, and memory does not meet these requirements, you may experience frequent system freezing.

Freezing may result if any hardware such as the keyboard or mouse are not compatible with the operating system on your PC. Any program which needs a lot of memory can cause freezing due to possible memory conflicts with other programs and even with the operating system. This type of conflict will markedly slow down your computer and can be the cause of frequent freezing. To eliminate these problems, you should only install hardware and programs which are compatible with your computer.

Some applications like Internet Explorer and some third-party software, will store information in the Temp folder of your system. If your hard disk capacity is small you may not have the space to store these temporary files, and you will as a result experience freezing. To avoid this you can use utilities, for example Disk Cleanup, to remove uneccessary files and data from your hard drive and thus to free up considerable disk space. With Disk Cleanup, you can remove uneccessary files, program files, temporary Internet files, Web pages and more. Disk Cleanup will empty your Recycle Bin and compress files. With Windows XP, You can find Disk Cleanup by clicking on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tool -> Disk Cleanup.

Errors and bad sectors will develop on your hard drive over a period of use. When you or a program try to get information stored in the bad sectors, your system will freeze. The hard drive must be maintained in good working order by regular use of Windows XP system maintenance tools for example Disk Defragmenter and Chkdsk.

To open Disk Defragmenter go to the System Tools menu. You can then defragment drives which are identified by the letters C:, D:, etc. You can run ChkDsk from Start -> Run or from the command prompt. Chkdsk volume:/f will repair disk errors without scanning for bad sectors, and chkdsk volume:/r commands will repair errors and will identify bad sectors on the hard drive and mark them.

Windows registry may also cause system errors and freezing if it is corrupted or damaged. To correct this problem, you must scan the registry for errors and remove all uneccessary and obsolete entries. The best way to handle this is by downloading a quality registry cleaner tool from the internet. Registry cleaner applications are designed to be easy to use and will correct registry problems safely and quickly. We tested several of the most popular registry cleaners and found that there is considerable difference in performance, ease of use and features available. We found that one registry cleaner was able to find as much as 50% more errors than some others and was a superior application.
